1796 Engraving Chatoyer the Chief of the Black Charaibe
Rare ORIGINAL 1796 Copper plate Engraving "Chatoyer the Chief of the Black Charaibes in St. Vincent with his five Wives." Artist; Brunyas, Augustino, engraved by Audinet and published by I. Stockdale. One of a series of prints based on the famous paintings by Brunyas of life in the 18th- century West Indies and published by Stockdale in Bryan Edwards' landmark History, Civil and Commercial, of the British Colonies in the West Indies. This scene showing a Carib chief and his five hard-working wives provides a fascinating glimpse at the lives and customs of this soon-to-be-extinct people. . The engraving measures about 8 " X 6 1/2" and has a few foxing spots, mostly outside the image area. It also has the original folds.
